Boulder in Summer

When the kids finished school for the year, we decided to make a short visit to Boulder, Colorado. We live in Austin, Texas, so opted to make the drive. We did an overnight each way in Amarillo. Here is our experience.

Travel

Since this was a road trip and unique for us, I’ll keep this brief. If you make your way through Amarillo, I can recommend the Embassy Suites on Buchanan Street. It‘s a nice, pet friendly, hotel in downtown Amarillo. It had a nice bar, comfortable Hilton brand hotel and a great option for a stop over visit.

Lodging

We stayed at this Airbnb, hosted by Karl. The house is just north of Boulder and maybe 10 minutes to the city center. It worked out great for us. There was a large basement / second living room area that included a desk for working. The upstairs had a great balcony overlooking Boulder. There were 3 spacious bedrooms, kitchen with everything you would need a nice backyard for the dog.

To Do

There are a lot of attractions in the Boulder / Denver area. We only had a few days, so these are the attractions we opted for and our experiences with each.

Pearl Street Mall - This is main walking and shopping area of Boulder. There are several blocks of shops and restaurants of all kinds. One of our favorite spots was Bohemian Biergarten. Great german food and selection of beers. We also visited the Boulder County Farmer‘s Market. This only runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays and doesn’t allow pets, so keep that in mind.

Meow Wolf - We had visited the Santa Fe exhibit of this art installation and decided to visit the Denver site. It was very cool design. They went with an alien theme. It sits right near the Denver Bronco’s stadium. Easy to get to. We spent a couple of hours walking around and checking it out. Never solved the mystery, but it was very cool.

Chautauqua - This was probably our favorite spot. The setting was beautiful. There are tons of hikes that originate at the base and take you up to some incredible views of the valley and Boulder. Highly recommend.

All in all, Boulder is a fantastic town. The area is known for the winter fun, but the summer temps and hikes are well worth the trip. It’s a great outdoor city and an easy hop down to Denver for some bigger city conveniences.

Enjoy
